Maldives-Turkiye Drone Agreement: Amidst the recent tension between India and Maldives, President Mohammad Muizzu is once again seen against India. Muizzu has signed an agreement with Turkey regarding drones. Maldives will patrol the Special Economic Water area through this drone. Till now India and Maldives were jointly patrolling this area of the Indian Ocean. This agreement between Maldives and Turkey has been reached after the Muizzu government has given time to Indian soldiers to leave the country till March 15.
Maldivian news service company Adhaadhoo reported on Tuesday that Male has signed an agreement with a Turkish company to purchase military drones to patrol the country’s maritime zones. Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has allocated $37 million for this agreement.
Has Maldives become a swing state?
Swing state is a term used for those countries which keep changing relations for their benefit. That is, whenever we see benefits from a country, we become close to it and then after satisfying our interests, we keep a distance. The recent behavior of Maldives shows that it has become a swing state. As long as its interests were being served by India, Maldives considered India as its guardian and now it has become a stooge of China because it wants investment and funds from China.
Are China and Maldives making plans together?
Earlier, India used to monitor the shores of Maldives, but after his visit to China, Muizzu gave an ultimatum to the Indian soldiers to return. Purchasing drones for surveillance in the Indian Ocean soon after this is no coincidence. China has a hand in changing the attitude of Maldives because it wants its dominance in the Indian Ocean and from here it also gets the benefit of keeping a direct eye on India.
